Watch Size Guide — How to Find the Right Fit for Your Wrist
A beautiful watch that's too big looks clumsy. Too small, and it looks like you borrowed it from someone else. Getting the size right matters more than most people think.
Here's how to find your perfect fit.
How to Measure Your Wrist
You'll need a flexible tape measure or a strip of paper and a ruler.
- Wrap the tape around your wrist just below the wrist bone (where you'd normally wear a watch)
- Note the measurement in centimetres
- Don't pull too tight — you want a comfortable, natural measurement
Common Wrist Sizes
| Wrist Size | Category |
|---|---|
| Under 15cm | Small |
| 15-17cm | Medium |
| 17-19cm | Large |
| Over 19cm | Extra Large |
Choosing the Right Case Diameter
The case diameter is the width of the watch face (not including the crown). Here's what works for each wrist size:
| Wrist Size | Recommended Case Size |
|---|---|
| Small (under 15cm) | 34-38mm |
| Medium (15-17cm) | 38-42mm |
| Large (17-19cm) | 40-44mm |
| Extra Large (19cm+) | 44-46mm |
The Lug-to-Lug Test
The lugs are the parts of the watch case where the strap attaches. They should not hang over the edges of your wrist. If they do, the watch is too big regardless of how the case diameter looks from above.
Case Thickness
Case thickness is often overlooked but equally important:
- Under 8mm — Ultra-thin. Slides easily under shirt cuffs. Elegant and dressy.
- 8-12mm — Standard. Works for most occasions and wrist sizes.
- 12mm+ — Thick/sporty. Makes a bold statement but can feel heavy.
Rule of thumb: If you want a watch you can wear with formal and casual clothing, aim for 8-11mm thickness.
Strap Length
Most watches come with standard strap lengths that fit wrists from 15-20cm. If you're at either extreme:
- Small wrists: Look for watches with adjustable clasps or shorter strap options
- Large wrists: Check if extra links or longer straps are available
For metal bracelet watches, you can usually have links added or removed by a local jeweller.
Strap Width
The strap width should match the lug width of the watch case. Common widths are:
- 18mm — Smaller, dressier watches
- 20mm — Most versatile, fits medium-sized watches
- 22mm — Larger, sportier watches
- 24mm — Oversized or dive watches
Common Sizing Mistakes
- Choosing trendy over practical. Oversized watches look great on Instagram but can be uncomfortable daily.
- Ignoring thickness. A 40mm watch that's 15mm thick will feel much bigger than the diameter suggests.
- Not trying before committing. If you can, visit a shop to try similar sizes on your wrist before buying online.
- Forgetting about comfort. A watch should feel like it belongs on your wrist, not like it's weighing your arm down.
Still Not Sure?
When in doubt, a 40mm case with a 10mm thickness is the most universally flattering size. It works on most wrist sizes and suits both casual and formal settings.
